SACE scaling data

How your Stage 2 grades turn into a number SATAC can compare across every subject — and why no site can show you an exact per-subject scaling table.

The short answer

Most sites can only guess how a grade scales in a given subject. This page uses calcATAR’s published Complete Subject Scaling Table below, so you can look up the real scaled score for any subject and grade instead of a generic estimate.

Complete Subject Scaling Table

Every Stage 2 subject’s scaled score (out of 20) for each grade — the real relationship between the grade you’re awarded and what it’s worth in your aggregate. This is exactly what the calculator uses behind the scenes.

Subject A++/HDA+/DA/CA-/P B+BB- C+CC- D+DD- E+EE-
How to read it: find your subject’s row, then the column for your predicted grade — that number is your scaled score out of 20. Add up your best 4 scaled scores in full, plus half of your 5th subject, to get your university aggregate out of 90. That aggregate is what maps to an ATAR — try it directly in the SACE calculator.

Patterns that tend to repeat, year to year

Scaling outcomes shift with each cohort, but a few tendencies show up most years:

  • A mid-range grade in an examined subject often scales similarly to a top grade in a subject with no exam component.
  • A pass-level grade in a science subject can scale higher than a stronger grade in a subject like PE, Art, or Outdoor Education, reflecting the strength of each subject’s typical cohort.
  • Mathematical Methods and General Mathematics tend to sit close together once bonus points for Methods are factored in.

None of this is a guarantee — it reflects general trends, not this year’s numbers.
